The Greenlink interconnector (about £430 million / US$580 million) is a 201 km undersea cable linking the UK’s National Grid to Ireland, running between County Wexford in Ireland and Freshwater West beach in southwest Wales. That beach was the filming location for Dobby’s death scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010). Fans have turned a spot there into a memorial where they leave handwritten tributes and painted pebbles.
The original planned route would have gone right through the memorial. After a BBC News interview about the project, hundreds of concerned Harry Potter fans called the project managers. Simon Ludlam, CEO of Etchea Energy (the project manager), initially had no idea who Dobby was and was baffled that people were so upset about a fictional character’s “grave.” Once he understood the strength of feeling, the team redesigned the route to avoid the site completely.
Ludlam later joked that Dobby is now “happy” and the project is proceeding. Locals and fans welcomed the change: the memorial draws international tourists to Pembrokeshire (tourism is a major local industry, worth hundreds of millions of pounds and supporting a large share of jobs). The new path does pass relatively close to Bronze Age remains, however.
This isn’t the first time the Dobby memorial has been protected—National Trust (which owns the land) previously allowed it to stay after a consultation, while asking visitors not to leave socks (a reference to the character’s freedom) because of the environmentally sensitive beach.
